Landmines warning sign

There have been reports on how “Protestware”/”Sabotageware” are induced in open sources as a way to stop war (in context of 2022). How so ever noble they may appeal to you as a responsible ethical developer, they might end up with a similar fate as unexplored/unexploded World War 2 Bombs : Unexplored Ordanance

Screen shot from : World war 2 Bomb disposals in Europe

The only truth of war is : It will end one day, however the Ghost you create will survive!

Wars had come and gone, trade relations were broken and formed. Your malicious code might stay!

Global business will resume, as after all profit drives the Peace and the War!

What if your malicous code end up in Hospital equipments, which later on land up in an unrelated nation, decades later. Inducing some intentional malicy into a code base, could end up killing your own great grandson decades after: You don’t know!

WW2 bombs are still killing effecting people!

There is a proverb : “An eye for an eye will leave whole world blind”.

And there is an additional argument on the internet “But if you don’t act, its only you who will end up blind!”.

A balance between this two will be to have a bullet proof goggles for every one to save everyone from getting blind.

As an ethical software engineer, you must put efforts to create this bullet proof goggles.

Ponder on how a code base can be saved from the war, rather than how a code base can be used to wage a war!
